Californie - partie 1 California - part 1

Nous sommes arrêtés pour quelques soirs dans un BLM au parc Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Nous sommes allés voir des sculptures géantes en métal d'animaux à Galleta Meadows. Le lendemain, nous sommes allés voir des pictographies sur une roche, et visiter la belle petite ville de Julian, ou nous avons acheté une belle grosse tarte aux pommes/caramel/pacanes. Un autre jour, nous avons visité Slab City et Salvation Mountain. C'est là qu'un homme a bâti une montagne avec des choses qui lui ont été données. Slab City est une ancienne base militaire ou plusieurs "hippys" se sont installés dans leur motorisé. Nous sommes partis pour voir le parc national Joshua Tree. C'est un très grand parc avec des arbres de formes particulières et avec un amas de fleurs vertes et blanches, au printemps. D'ici on pouvait voir San Andrea's Fault. C'est là que deux plaques tectoniques se rencontrent et qui causent des tremblements de terre en Californie.  En chemin pour aller visiter le parc national Death Valley, nous avons passé par Palm Springs (où il y a beaucoup d'aéoliennes), par Devil's Punch Bowl et la fameuse route 66, et nous avons visité la région du Mont Whitney, qui est la 2e plus haute montagne des  États-Unis. Death Valley est l'endroit le plus chaud, le plus sec et le plus bas en élévation en Amérique du Nord (282 pieds sous le niveau de la mer). Il y a des panoramas vastes et spectaculaires, des rochers de couleurs variés et de formes bizarres. Nous avons monté en élévation et marché des sentiers pour prendre des photos. Dans un des sentiers, nous avons eu la chance de voir un coyote qui se promenait librement. Pour notre dernière journée dans la région, nous avons visité Manzanar. C'est un des camps où tous les gens de race japonaise ont été détenus après Pearl Harbor de 1942-45.

We stopped at a BLM in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. We went and see giant metal sculptures of animals in Galleta Meadows. The next day, we went to see pictographs on a rock and visited the small town of Julian, where we purchased an amazing apple/caramel/pecan pie. Another day, we went to Slab City and Salvation Mountain. This is where a man built a mountain with things that people gave him. Slab City is an old military base where a large number of hippies are now living in their trailers and motor homes. We then went to visit Joshua Tree National Park. It is a very large park where we find trees of a very particular shape and in the spring the trees have allot of white and green flowers. From the park we are able to see San Andrea's Fault. This is where two tectonic plates meet and causes earth quakes in California.  On the road to Death Valley National Park, we went through Palm Springs,(where we saw many wind turbines),  the Devil's Punch Bowl and the famous Route 66. We also visited the region of Mount Whitney, which is the 2nd tallest mountain in the US. Death Valley is the hottest, the driest and the lowest point in elevation in North America (282 feet below sea level). There are panoramic views at every turn and spectacular vistas, rocks of all colours and shapes. We went up in elevations and walked trails to take photos. In one of the trails, we saw a coyote that was taking his daily walk. On our last day, we visited Manzanar. It was one of many camps where people of the Japanese race were detained after Pearl Harbor from 1942-45.

Yuma, Arizona

Nous avons passé deux semaines dans le désert près de Yuma, dans le BLM Pilot Knob ( Bureau of Land Management). C'est un camping sans service d'eau, d'électricité et toilettes. Nous avons fait plusieurs nouveaux amis qui viennent du Québec et de la Colombie-Britannique, avec qui nous avons partagé des dîners communautaires.  Nous sommes allés à Los Algodones au Mexique, à Quartzsite et Imperial Dam. Nous avons vu des dunes de sable, où circulaient des tout-terrains. Nous avons eu l'opportunité d'aller dans plusieurs marchés aux puces. Au camping, tous les levés et couchés de soleil étaient magnifiques. Nous nous dirigeons à l'ouest vers la Californie.

We spent two weeks in the desert near Yuma, in the Pilot Knob BLM (Bureau of Land Management). This is camping without the service of water, electricity and washrooms. We made a lot of new friends from Quebec and British Columbia, with whom we shared pot luck lunches. We visited Los Algodones in Mexico, Quartzsite, and Imperial Dam. We saw dune buggies travelling in the huge sand dunes. We had the opportunity of going to many flea markets around the area. And we have to say that the Arizona sunrises and sunsets are the most spectacular we have ever seen. We are now heading west into California.

Tucson & Phoenix, Arizona

Nous avons eu que de belles journées ensoleillées depuis notre arrivée en Arizona. À Tucson, nous avons visité l'"Arizona Sonora Desert Museum". C'est impressionnant de voir les animaux et la végétation du désert. Il y avait des colibris, des cactus, des arbres, des reptiles et des "javelinas". Nous sommes arrêtés pour visiter l' "Old Tucson Movie Set. Des centaines de films westerns ont été produits ici avec de grands acteurs comme John Wayne. Nous avons aussi visité le Sabino Canyon, l'église San Xavier Del Bac Mission, la Biosphère 2 et le "Casa Grande Ruins National Monument". En partant de Tucson, nous disons au revoir à Johanne, Jacques, Linda et Donald, du Québec. À Phoenix, nous avons visité l'école d'architecture de Frank Lloyd Wright, Taliesin West. Nous avons eu l'opportunité de circuler sur l'Apache Trail, qui a été choisi pour "The Best Scenic Drive" en Arizona". Nous sommes arrêtés à Goldfield Ghost Town, qui est une vraie ville d'antan, ou on y trouve un bordel et une église cote à côté. L'Apache Trail est une ancienne route utilise par les "stages coach", les indiens, les cowboys et les mineurs. Une grande partie de ce chemin est en gravier. À la fin du chemin de gravier, il y avait le lac Roosevelt, un barrage d'hydro avec un pont dont l'empattement est le plus grand en Amérique du Nord. On rencontre là, Marjolaine et André, du Québec.  En soirée, nous sommes alles à Arizona Opry pour un souper spectacle de Rock n Roll qui était excellent. Il ne faut pas oublie notre visite au restaurant "Organ Stop Pizza". WOW!!! Ici nous avons écouté un  organiste joue un ancien orgue trouve dans les cinémas de film muet. C'était grandiose.

The weather is fantastic in Arizona. In Tucson, we visited the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. It is impressive to see the desert animals and vegetation found here. We saw hummingbirds, cactus, trees, reptiles and javelinas. We also had the opportunity of visiting Old Tucson \movie Set, where hundreds of Western films were produces here with great actors like John Wayne. While here, we also visited the Sabino Canyon, the San Xavier Del Bac Mission, the Biosphere 2 and the Casa Grande Ruin National Monument. As we left, we said our goodbyes to Johanne, Jacques, Linda and Donald, from Québec. In Phoenix, we visited the Frank Lloyd Wright school of Architecture, Taliesin West. We also had the opportunity to travel on the famous Apache Trail. It has been chosen the "Best Scenic Drive" in Arizona. This trail has been used by cowboys, stage coaches, indians and miners, and is mostly a gravel road. We stopped in Goldfield Ghost Town, which is a old western town and where you can see a Bordello beside a church. At the end of the gravel road, there was Roosevelt Lake Hydro Dam, and a bridge that has the largest single span in North America. One evening, we attended the Rock n Roll dinner/show at the Arizona Opry. What an excellent show. We can't forget the lovely dinner at the Organ Stop Pizza restaurant, where an organ player was playing a old organ found in Silent movie theatre. WOW!!!! What a majestic show.

  

 

 

 

 

 

Notre première semaine en Arizona Our first week in Arizona

Il fait beau et chaud ici. Nous sommes restés dans les villes de Willcox et Benson. Nous avons visité autour et avons pris plusieurs photos de "Sandhill Cranes" à Willcox et au Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area. Il y avait des centaines d'oiseaux. La région de Willcox est un endroit de migrations pour les grues. Nous sommes allés visiter le parc national Chiricahua. Les montagnes sont tellement différentes. Les roches semblent être empilées une sur l'autre, et nous donne l'impression qu'elles vont tombées d'un moment à l'autre. Nous avons marché sur plusieurs sentiers dans ce parc. Nous avons eu la chance de visiter "Gammons Gulch Movie Set", au nord de Benson. C'est un endroit superbe où plusieurs films de cowboy ont été faits. Le propriétaire a construit et refait plusieurs des bâtiments de ses mains. Nous sommes aussi allés visiter la ville de Bisbee. C'est une ancienne ville minière, et maintenant nous avons trouvé plusieurs artisans. Nous avons eu la chance de visiter la fameuse ville de Tombstone, là où a eu lieu la bataille historique de l’"OK Corral". Nous avons assisté à la reconstitution de cette bataille.

The weather here is very pleasant. We stayed in the cities of Willcox and Benson. We visited around and had the chance to take many pictures of Sandhill Cranes in Willcox and at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area. There were hundreds of birds. The Willcox region is a winter nesting area for the cranes. We had the chance to visit the Chiricahua National Park. We found the mountains very interesting. The rocks lay one on top of the other, and it seems they could fall at any time. We walked on many of the trails. We had the chance of visiting a place where many cowboy films were done. It is called Gammons Gulch Movie Set, north of Benson. The owner built and fixed up many of the buildings by himself. We also visited the old copper mine town of Bisbee. Now it is mostly a town of artisans. We had a chance to see a re-enactment of the historic showdown at the OK Corral, in Tombstone. This a small western town, where the buildings and streets still have the look of the cowboy era. The people on the streets are dressed accordingly.
